Tropical Floras of the Late Pennsylvanian-early Permian Transition: Carrizo Arroyo in Context

چکیده
The flora of Carrizo Arroyo is typical of a seasonally moisture-limited environment. Dominant elements were conifers, callipterids and the pteridosperm Sphenopteridium, all plants usually associated with indicators of seasonal moisture regimes. More generally, the Virgilian-Wolfcampian transition was a time of change from dominance of the tropical landscape by floras rich in tree ferns, pteridosperms, and lycopsids, to one dominated by conifers, peltasperms, and cycadophytes. The two types of floras do appear to have overlapped, but possibly in a manner reflective of local landscape heterogeneity. At Carrizo Arroyo for example, the wetland elements are rare and fragmentary, indicating local transport, most likely from wet microhabitats proximate to the site of deposition. Local environmental heterogeneity appears to have been part of larger scale heterogeneity in the region, probably reflective of climatic and edaphic differences in this tectonically active 105

The Pennsylvanian-permian Vegetational Transition: a Terrestrial Analogue to the Onshore-offshore Hypothesis.
An analysis of 68 floras from the Pennsylvanian and Early Permian of Euramerica reveals distinct patterns of environmental distribution. Wetland assemblages are the most commonly encountered floras from the Early and Middle Pennsylvanian. Floras from drier habitats characterize the Permian. Both wetland and dry-site floras occur in the Late Pennsylvanian, but floristic overlap is minimal, which...
متن کاملMorphology and distribution of fossil soils in the Permo-Pennsylvanian Wichita and Bowie Groups, north-central Texas, USA: implications for western equatorial Pangean palaeoclimate during icehouse–greenhouse transition
Analysis of stacked Permo-Pennsylvanian palaeosols from north-central Texas documents the influence of palaeolandscape position on pedogenesis in aggradational depositional settings. Palaeosols of the Eastern shelf of the Midland basin exhibit stratigraphic trends in the distribution of soil horizons, structure, rooting density, clay mineralogy and colour that record long-term changes in soil-f...
متن کاملThe Pennsylvanian–Permian transition in the low-latitude carbonate record and the onset of major Gondwanan glaciation
Recent studies suggest a marked expansion of glacial ice across much of Gondwana beginning in the earliest Permian. Because expansion of glacial ice results in a lowering of sea level, the imprint of ice expansion should be evident worldwide as significant exposure event, hiatuses, or other evidence for sea level drop at or near the Pennsylvanian–Permian boundary. This literature review investi...
متن کاملClimate and vegetational regime shifts in the late Paleozoic ice age earth.
The late Paleozoic earth experienced alternation between glacial and non-glacial climates at multiple temporal scales, accompanied by atmospheric CO2 fluctuations and global warming intervals, often attended by significant vegetational changes in equatorial latitudes of Pangaea. We assess the nature of climate-vegetation interaction during two time intervals: middle-late Pennsylvanian transitio...
متن کاملStratigraphy and paleogeographic significance of metamorphic rocks in the Shadow Mountains, western Mojave Desert, California
Stratigraphic correlations presented here for the ductilely deformed and metamorphosed rocks exposed in the Shadow Mountains indicate that they formed on the North American continental margin and are not exotic or significantly displaced from their site of origin. These strata represent a depositional history that spans Late Proterozoic and Paleozoic passive margin development, late Paleozoic t...
